About
My name is Kelly Avery, and I am a native Central Oregonian and devoted Christian, now residing in Fort Collins, Colorado. I oversee the networking, computers, and other technology related stuff at my church and play drums in our worship band as well. I have been an avid computer user and technology buff (read geek) for many years. I’m happily married for 14 years to my wife Brandi, and we have three great kids. I got my start in computers right after Brandi & I got married; her parents gave us an old Apple Performa, and with a free connection to the Internet (remember the days of free dial-up Internet?) I was on my way! This machine was soon replaced by a Cyrix/Pentium 233 running Windows 98, and I’m not sure that’s a step up or not. Being the curious type, I just had to know how these things ticked. In doing so, I often broke stuff, and had to learn how to fix them. This included breaking Windows (no pun intended) and it often took my wife’s e-mail and other important stuff with it, much to her chagrin; thus, I learned about backups. I also progressively learned about the inner workings of computers and operating systems in general. One day my friend brought over his Linux (Redhat 6.2 or 7) install disks, and talked me into letting him install it on our computer. He said it was way better than Windows. While I wasn’t sure it was better than windows (it couldn’t use the dialup modem on our computer to get on the net, and looked ugly as a mud fence) I was sure that it trashed Windows when he installed it, which took a total reinstall to fix. Years later, when my apprehension to Linux and other UNIX-based OS’es died down, I learned how powerful and versatile they are, and really came to appreciate them. I actually prefer them for most things. FreeBSD is my favorite for servers, and Ubuntu or a derivative for the desktop. Lately I’ve taken an interest in web design. I do tend to gravitate toward the technical side of things, rather than the design side. Which brings me to the purpose of this website. I wanted a place to put the things I have learned over the years that others might benefit from, and a place that I could write about things that interest me when I have time. I enjoy writing, though I don’t consider myself a journalist at all. I just read things on the web, and relay them here. So hopefully you’ve found this site useful, and please do come back again! It’s updated as often as I can manage, so with each visit there should be something new. Peace!
